 Trivia and Player Notes
This Vietnam veteran was mostly used as a pinch-hitter during his major league career, but when he had the opportunity to be in the starting lineup he made the most of it.

John "Champ" Summers was also one of the few players in his day who was into lifting weights. On 7/29/78 as a member of the Cincinnati Reds he became one of only 11 players to ever hit a home run into the "red" seats at Riverfront/Cinergy field.

He appeared in the 1984 World Series as a pinch hitter with the Padres.

After his playing career ended, he became a coach in the Yankees organization and was their hitting coach at the major league level for parts of two seasons.

He later made appearances as a motivational speaker.
