October 1, 1905, vs. Brooklyn, he was called out of the stands, signed a contract in the dugout, and caught that day for the Cardinals. (He was a well-known municipal league player in St. Louis at the time). This was the last known case of a player being called out of the stands to play in a MLB game. (There is a press clipping in Cooperstown verifying this).
