Finished in 8th place in the Home Run Derby at the 2004 All-Star game with only 3 home runs. Ortiz also finished 4th in the 2005 Home Run Derby at the MLB All-star game. He finished with a total of 20 home runs over 2 rounds. He was representing the Dominican Republic in the competition. He finished in 4th place again in the Home Run Derby at the 2006 All-Star Game.

Finished 2nd in 2005 AL MVP voting behind Alex Rodriguez, losing 331-307, in his attempt to become the first designated hitter in mlb history to win the award.

Played in 2006 World Baseball Classic for Dominican Republic.
