Rick Monday was the first ever draft pick in the Amateur Entry draft, which started in 1965. Monday was selected by the Kansas City Athletics and signed for $104,000 which was considered well under his value had he been a free agent on the open market. Monday was the hero of the 1981 NLCS in game 5 against the Montreal Expos when he hit a home run in the top of the 9th inning off of Steve Rogers to give the Dogers a 2-1 lead and eventual victory to push them to the World Series. The home run knocked the Expos out of the playoffs, their only playoff appearance in franchise history. The game was played on a Monday afternoon and was known in Montreal as Blue Monday. Member of the World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981. Notes: Played in 2 All-Star games during his career (1968, 1978) | |||||||||||||||
