Mike Malott returned for his third year with San Jose State after sitting out the previous two consecutive seasons with a torn rotator cuff. His velocity did return however and has been clocked as high as 93 mph in addition to his nasty slider and good change. Malott primarily sits 86-91 mph with the fastball and his slider is 76-81 mph. The change up is usually around 77 mph but when he doesn't take enough off the ball is when his change becomes not as effective. Malott has added a knuckle-curve which he brought back from his high school days and plans to add the pitch to his arsinal. Malott petitioned for an extention of his eligibility and could return in 2006 to the college ranks, however not with the Spartans. Malott needs to show that his repaired arm can hold up through a full season with consistancy to prove his talent belongs at the major league level.
