 Trivia and Player Notes
Morris was coaching high school baseball in 1997 when his team forced him to try out for the major leagues when they realized that he could still throw a ball 98 miles per hour. Morris said he would try out if his team made it to the playoffs that season and when his team followed through on their side of the deal, Morris followed through on his by attending a Tampa Bay Devil Rays tryout camp in Texas.

At the camp, Morris threw 98 and the scouts led by Doug Gassaway shook their guns to make sure they weren't dreaming. He only threw 88 miles per hour in his younger days but he caught the attention of scouts who promptly deposited him into their minor league system. Morris worked his way through the system and made his debut in Arlington against the Texas Rangers, later that summer.

Morris' story is captured in the Disney Movie "The Rookie" where Morris is played by Dennis Quaid.
