Trivia and Player Notes

Dunne started off his career with a bang as a first round draft pick for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1984. He joined the US Olympic Baseball Team that summer, winning a silver medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Dunne pitched 1 game during the tournament and did not allow a run.

The following season, Mike joined the Cardinals AA team in Arkansas and put in a good showing. He was dealt to the Pirates after the 1986 season and had a terrific first half at Vancouver, the Pirates AAA team. He was called up to the Pirates and went on to win 13 of 23 starts and he finished with an ERA of 3.03. His success earned him the nod for NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year and he finished second to Padres catcher Benito Santiago in rookie of the year voting.

Dunne had a good sophomore season with the Pirates the next year but he was never the same after 1988 going 5-15 with an ERA well over 5.

After his career, he joined the Bradley University coaching staff as their pitching coach.

Notes: His best outing came when he threw a 2-hit shutout against the Reds on August 25, 1987...Named NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News in 1987...He had the best success against Chris James (2/17) and Eric Davis (2/13 6 ks).
