 Trivia and Player Notes
Despite not making his major league debut until he was 29, Rich Amaral was a utility man in the major leagues for 10 years, retiring at the age of 38 in 2000.

He was a college standout at UCLA earning nod as second baseman on the College All-American team. He was drafted that year by the cubs in the 2nd round and then spent the next 9 years in the majors and it appeared that he was destined to be a career minor leaguer.

But a funny thing happened to him in the minors. He just kept getting better and better. Between 1983 and 1991, his batting average went up each year, peaking at .346 at Calgary in 1991. Not only could he hit for average, but he could take a walk and steal some bases and he suddenly became a very good candidate to be a major league utility infielder.

He grasped this opportunity with the Mariners and spent 8 seasons in the role, getting as much as 373 at bats in 1993 and hitting close to .292 in 1996 with 25 stolen bases. He continued to get on base a rate of .340 and he continued to be versatile in the field. Over his career, he played 40 games at all positions except for catcher and pitcher.

An injury in 2000 forced the Orioles to release him in 2000 after making the team as a utility infielder.

Notes: Had 5 hits in a game in 1993.
