Paul Goldschmidt's Batting Stats and Ranks (Rk)

The "Rk" (Ranking) column on stat pages is an algorithmic ranking for a player within the given league for that season. The value is available for both batting and pitching statistics and is based on a player's cumulative ranking between several statistics.
br> For each basic statistic, the top 20 of that category are ranked and assigned a score of 1-20 based on rankings. 20 for 1st place and 1 for 20th place. Using about 15 statistic categories, the total points for each player are summed up to provide a value that is then compared against other players. The player with the highest cumulative ranking gets a rank of 1. All players with rank points will be given a final rank. If a player does not have a rank value, it means he wasn't in the top 20 in any of the basic statistical categories. Rankigns for averages will require a player to have the minimum number of plate appearances.

The point of the rankings is to get an idea of how a player's statistics rank him compared to his peers. The system is not perfect and though its intention is to reward players who are listed in several categories, it also has drawbacks, one of which is ranking pitchers who are in the top 20 of sacrifice hits, mistakingly giving the impression that they are in the top 100 hitters in the league when likely they are not. Pitching rankings definitely skew towards starting pitchers.

Its important to note that this is just an indicator and is usually fairly indicative of a player's success for a given season. Arguments can be made about every ranking as the debate about which players are better can carry on for eons.

Rankings with a yellow highlight indicate a top-5 finish.
