About the Player DataThe following section explains the player profile and statistical data that you see in the players section of The Baseball Cube. Thousands of hours of work have been put into this section and it is by far the most visited area of the site. About 30% of daily traffic is on the player pages. Its important to note that I do not explain every single field of data on the page as some are self-explanatory. Also, don't forget that I sell some data products as well. Check out my data products here! Sources of Data Data used on the Player Profile pages, including biographical information and statistics, have mostly been pieced together from a variety of sources including, but not limited to the following publications and web sites. Listed Position The fielding position listed for major leaguers represents the most popular positions played by that player. Minor leaguers have a static position that is set when he is added to our database and does not necessarily represent his current position. High School Attended Derived initially from the Sporting News Player Registers, this is a field we wanted to add since no other site had it listed. The ultimate goal was to create High School pages to link together high school alumni to allow visitors to determine not only who went to their high school but to be able to follow their career throughout college, the minors and maybe even the majors. The high school section is an obvious work in progress. As of August/2005, 2700 high schools had alumni pages listing all known players. I am still in the process of researching high schools for thousands of players and someday, I hope to boast the ultimate baseball alumni section. If you see a player with a missing high school listing and you know what it should be, please don't hesitate to contact me. Its important to note that only one high school can be listed with each player so in a case where a player attended 2 schools, I have only included the graduation school. Also, there are no plans to ever show high school statistics on the site. College Statistics and Colleges Attended Only Division I college statistics are listed on the site. The main reason for this its tough enough to extract the stats for the 250+ Division I schools, let alone finding statistics for the 1400+ other schools in various other divisions. (II, III, NAIA, NJCAA). If you ask me if I can add your non Division II or III school's stats, I'll probably decline! Currently, I have statistics for all (or most) Div I schools since 2002 and for many of them, I go back even further. Unlike minor league statistics, each season has complete statistics per team. For example, though I don't have all 2001 team stats, for the ones that I do, there will be no missing players. (Once again, unlike the minor league stats.) Minor League Statistics The bread and butter of The Baseball Cube is the minor league statistics. Currently (August/2005), I have complete stats for all minor leagues from 2002 to 2004 and complete historical minor league statistics for all players who were active as of 2002 and later. This is the cause of the aforementioned incomplete minor league statistics for seasons prior to 2002. Whereas the college statistics are added by team, the minor league statistics are added by player and so there are definite gaps in team and league statistics prior to the 2002 season. I am hoping to be able to fill in the blanks going back from 2001 until I can get no further but that's something that's still on the backburner for now. Major League Statistics I can honestly say there is nothing special about the MLB stats on the site as you can probably find them on about a dozen other sites on the Internet. The data goes back to 1903, the first official season of Major League Baseball. There is data prior to this season and I recommend checking out Baseball Reference for more information. BR is the main inspiration behind this site and its the best MLB site I have ever seen. Most stats on the site are basic, non stat-head numbers that you will find on any baseball card. I don't carry splits or sabrmetric statistics like Runs Created, VORP or the other formulated statistics that were created to add more analytical power to a player's true value. A future iteration of this site will delve into the world of sabrmetrics but for now, basic will have to be good enough. The one area of MLB stats that is unique is that I carry Spring Training statistics starting in 2003. I decided that it would be interesting to see which players tried out for which teams but did not make the cut. Jose Canseco on the Expos? Only in ST! Why don't you include stats such as Runs Created or other Sabrmetric type stats? The primary reason for the focus on "basic" stats is that in order to calculate these statistics, you need much more than just the basic stats as an input. I've gone as far as including OPS and hopefully some day I will get to the point where deep statistics analysis will be a possibility. Biographies Biographies are another work-in-progress section of the web site. Though originally intended to be in point form, the latest incarnation is an article-style review of a baseball player's career and life, including where he ended up after baseball and how he got to the pros. Though its a ton of work to get all this information, I will take my time in building up this section and rely on outside help to fill in a lot of the biographies. If your favorite player does not yet have his bio up, feel free to submit it by email. As always, if you have a question or a comment on the site, contact me, Gary Cohen. |
