Data Inclusion RulesAbout The Baseball Cube
Though TBC prides itself on including a ton of baseball data in one place, we don't have it all. Here are the Rules for Data Inclusion for both teams, stats and players. An included player is one who has his own dedicated page on the site with biography information and statistics that fall within the range of the includes stats. An included team will have a dedicated page for team attributes, statistics and rosters.
A player with his own page also opens him up to have Other Stats on his site. These are off-season stats like Summer Leagues, Fall Leagues, playoffs, spring training and foreign leagues.
Major Leaguers and Teams
All Major League Players since 1871 are included.
Minor League Players and Teams
Minor League data on TBC is available since 1977 and every player with at least one minor league game in this time period is included on the site. Though minor league stats are included since 1977, some Major Leaguers may have minor league stats included for seasons prior to 1977.
Independent League Players and Teams
Any player who played at least one game in an Independent League since 1993. Indy stats are available on TBC since their most recent inception in 1993. Each player profile for every Indy player since 1993 will have a profile page though many of the players may not have a complete biography.
Japanese League Players
Full list of player stats and bios since 2007 which was when we started tracking Japanese league data.
Mexican League Players
Though the Mexican League is considered to be a "AAA" Level league, its not an official affiliated minor league and does not have the same inclusion rules as the Minor League data. Mexican league stats and players are included in full since 2000.
All historical draft picks since 1965 for all phases will have a player profile page on the The Baseball Cube. Though many of these players between 1965 and 1976 may not have statistics, they may have played in the Minor Leagues. A long-term project has TBC filling all player profile data for these players.
Division I College Players and teams
There are pages for all NCAA Division I players since 2002 whether they are included in one of the other criteria or they were not. Some players will have their historical stats listed from College to the Minors to the Major Leagues while some players will only have their College stats listed. Players in other divisions are not included (II,III,NAIA,NJCAA). Some schools will have players listed prior to 2002 and it is based on availability of data during the initial load of college data in 2003. Some Division I players may also have stats from lower college levels included. Player bios are included for a very high% of these Division I players.
Team Baseball Personnel
For all teams with full statistics included, there was every attempt to research all baseball personnel with the team in a baseball-related, non-administrative capacity. For Major League teams, this includes General Managers, Managers, Coaching Staffs, Scouts, Coordinators and Assistants to the GM. For all other leagues, the personnel is limited to Managers/Head Coaches and assistants. A baseball person listed here may or may not have histortical statistics and it is possible that a manager or coach will be listed only with baseball jobs only.
There is a profile page for all umpires since the 1950s along with game metrics for each umpire.
Scouts are listed in 2 ways. There are baseball people with "Scout" listed as their job and this is listed on player and team pages. Also, there is a separate Scouts project to identify the signing scout for each Draft Pick signing in our Draft database. And so the 2 Scout listings may not be lined up. For example, you may see Scout Joe Smitty is listed next to a player as a signing scout but he may not be listed as a scout for that organization for that season.
