Play by Play Data

Based on Retrosheet boxscore data, TBC wrote a program to parse through Event Codes to produce a basic written text of the event that occured. This information is displayed on the Play by Play page for each game and can bring the boxscore to life. Like other boxscore data, the information is available since 1957.

Each line will include the result of the play, the type of hit, location of the batted ball, the player who fielded the out and baserunner advancement. It will also include the type of strikeout (Swinging vs Called) if this information is available. Scoring plays will be in bold.

Note that the descriptions are programmed for the most likely events. There might be some events that occur that baseball fans would call crazy or nutso and include errors and wildness ... suffice to say that the odder plays may not come through exactly as they happend.
